Homes Not Hospitals: Why We Must Do This – and How It Is Being Done

The work of the Stolen Lives campaign has generated a great deal of focus on people with learning disabilities placed in hospital or other long-stay accommodation. People important to them are often left unable to visit, and there are many stories and examples of people losing contact, and not being able to get the system to listen to them.

As a result of the campaign, a debate was held in December 2024, and a Working Group has been set up to consider next steps. Building on that work, and other work, this event aims to encourage energy and action from everyone in a position to prevent people with learning disabilities or autism being sent away to hospital unnecessarily – and to ensure we have clear, achievable plans to bring people home.

It will reaffirm the human rights basis for such action but will primarily focus on celebrating examples of existing good practice in Wales, with a view to encouraging others to do likewise.

Join us at the event, and hear from people with a range of perspectives, who will collectively ensure that Wales can end this modern injustice.

At the event, we will:

• Hear from people’s experiences of the system;
• See a short film that puts lived experience at the heart of the day;
• Hear from a range of speakers about the essential elements of successful local services – and to share best practice from around Wales;
• Hold a Q&A session to explore next steps together.

Mae gwaith ymgyrch Bywydau wedi’u Dwyn wedi canolbwyntio’n benodol ar bobl sydd ag anableddau dysgu a gaiff eu lleoli mewn ysbytai neu lety arhosiad hir arall. Nid yw pobl sy’n bwysig iddynt yn aml yn gallu ymweld â nhw, ac mae nifer o enghreifftiau a straeon o bobl yn colli cysylltiad ac yn methu â sicrhau bod y system yn gwrando arnynt.

O ganlyniad i’r ymgyrch, cynhaliwyd dadl ym mis Rhagfyr 2024, ac mae Gweithgor wedi’i sefydlu i ystyried y camau nesaf. Gan adeiladu ar y gwaith hwnnw, ac unrhyw waith arall, nod y digwyddiad hwn yw annog brwdfrydedd gan bawb sydd mewn sefyllfa i gymryd camau i atal pobl ag anableddau dysgu neu awtistiaeth rhag cael eu hanfon i ysbytai yn ddiangen – ac i sicrhau bod gennym gynlluniau clir a chyraeddadwy i sicrhau bod pobl yn dychwelyd adref.

Bydd yn ailddatgan yr hawliau dynol ar gyfer camau o’r fath, gan ganolbwyntio’n bennaf ar ddathlu enghreifftiau o arfer dda yng Nghymru, gyda’r nod o annog pobl eraill i wneud yr un peth.

Ymunwch â ni yn y digwyddiad er mwyn clywed gan bobl sydd ag amrywiaeth o safbwyntiau ac a fydd, gyda’i gilydd, yn sicrhau y gall Cymru roi diwedd ar yr anghyfiawnder modern hwn.

Yn ystod y digwyddiad, byddwn yn:

• Clywed am brofiadau pobl o’r system;
• Gwylio ffilm fer sy’n sicrhau bod profiadau bywyd pobl wrth wraidd y diwrnod;
• Clywed gan amrywiaeth o siaradwyr am elfennau hanfodol gwasanaethau lleol llwyddiannus a chlywed enghreifftiau o arferion gorau o bob cwr o Gymru;
• Cynnal sesiwn holi ac ateb er mwyn archwilio’r camau nesaf gyda’n gilydd.
